Herbert Muschamp, a prominent American architecture critic, has died of lung cancer.  He was 59.

Muschamp became famous as the architecture critic for the New York Times. During his tenure at the Times, which began in 1992 Muschamp came to be considered by some as the nation's foremost judge of the architecture world. His writing championed now-famous architects such as Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Zaha Hadid and Jean Nouvel.
