Barbara Hoffstot [1919-1994] had a passionate and total commitment to the Town of Palm Beach. Once called “the mother of Palm Beach preservation,” Mrs. Hoffstot was the author of Landmark Architecture of Palm Beach, first published in 1974. Its third edition was published in 1991. She was a founder of the town’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, serving on that board until 1983. She was also a founder of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach of which she served as a vice president until her death. Her collection consists of black and white photographs of significant buildings in Palm Beach. Many of the photographs were published in her book.

Ballinger Award Image Collection:

Every year the Preservation Foundation has recognized residents of Palm Beach for outstanding historic restoration with the Robert I. Ballinger Award For Excellence in Architecture. The award is given in honor of architect Robert I. Ballinger, Jr. [1918-1987], a forceful advocate for preservation and an early chairman of the Town of Palm Beach Landmarks Commission. The first Ballinger Award was given to Robert T. Eigelberger, Jr. in 1988. Mr. Eigelberger was honored for his preservation of two historic homes designed by renowned architects Addison Mizner and Marion Sims Wyeth. The Foundation maintains photographs, slides and digital images of all the Ballinger Award winning houses. Many of the images appear in the foundation’s 2002 publication of Palm Beach: An architectural legacy.
