John S. Phipps of Bessemer Properties commissioned Volk to design the Royal Poinciana Plaza where the Royal Poinciana Hotel was once located. Phipps asked Volk to “design for us a shopping plaza in any style you wish; however, it must endure for fifty years.” Volk chose the Regency style which was adaptable to the open, modern plan. The shopping area is arranged so that patrons may be dropped off at the porticos, but the interior of the outdoor mall is limited to pedestrians only. An octagonal garden and restaurant were originally intended for the center of the plaza, but never realized.

The Plaza was designated as a landmark in 2008.
